There is an interesting background to the Cambodia gambling halls that reside just over the border from next door Thailand, where gambling hall gaming is not permitted. Eight gambling halls are situated in a relatively tiny space in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia gambling dens is in a perfect area, a 3 to four hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 most popular betting locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai workers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The astonishing capital acquired from the gambling halls ranges from $7.5 million to more than 12.5 million, and there are a number of limitations requirements for gambling den ownership. Ownership is required to be mainly Thai; although, financing sources are vague. The borders are formally open from 0900 to 1700, and although visas are allegedly needed to pass, there are methods around this, as is true of many borders.
The 1st Cambodia gambling halls premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving only one casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary bateau casino, contains 150 slot machines and 60 tables. The Naga gambling hall never closes with forty two tables of mini-punto banco, four tables of chemin de fer, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The 1st casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon opened. There are one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machines and sixty eight table games at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features three hundred slots and seventy tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slots and 96 gaming tables, including 87 baccarat (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machine games and 66 of the normal gaming tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight casinos in Poipet, again a part of a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slots and ninety seven games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an international vacation and hotel building that highlights numerous conveniences aside from the gambling den, which provides ten thousand square feet of one hundred and thirty one armed bandits and eighty eight tables.
