Cambodia Gambling Halls

[ English ]

There is an appealing background to the Cambodia gambling halls that reside just over the dividing line from neighboring Thailand, where gambling den wagering is not legal. Eight gambling dens are situated in a relatively tiny space in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia gambling halls is in an excellent location, a three to four hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the two most popular gaming locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a huge business with Thai laborers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The amazing income accrued from the casinos ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a couple of controls constraints for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is required to be largely Thai; although, investment sources are ambiguous. The borders are officially open from 09:00 to 1700, and although visas are supposedly needed to pass, there are methods and means around this, as is true of most borders.

The original Cambodia gambling halls premiered in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving only 1 casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored ship casino, features one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and 60 tables. The Naga river boat never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, 4 tables of chemin de fer, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The initial gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon opened. A total of one hundred and fifty slot machines and five tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machine games and 68 table games at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains three hundred slots and seventy table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slot machines and ninety six gaming tables, including 87 punto banco (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slots and sixty six of the common tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the eight gambling halls in Poipet, again a part of a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machines and 97 casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in a multinational resort and hotel compound that highlights a number of comforts accompanying the casino, which houses 10,000 square feet of 130 slots and eighty eight table games.
